Soloists of the Ensemble Nipponia – Japan: Traditional Vocal & Instrumental Music – Shakuhachi, Biwa, Koto, Shamisen
Nonesuch, 1976
Naturalism, which appeared in different works of art, was sprouted from soul and mind of people through many centuries. Music, that can describe or musically paint living of the planet, living of every its twig or settler, is arising like the Sun in the middle of dark sky – each sound is like a bolt from the blue, it's very subtle and harmonic, kinda pure landscape – distinctly, there is a lack of everything, that ever made by man. Scenery is growing under heaven. To be immovable, it reigns the dale of silence.
Such a magnificent music, which speaks with heart of nature, flows with rivers and channels in the land of Japan. It seems, that this playing can catch the moment, it's very split-second. Even the bloom of bamboo is stringed on winds of wood instruments. Japanese traditional compositions are always about meditative side of our life. And may be, they say, neither moreover nor less, that the whole way of our living is about it. Short zings of shakuhachi, assertive and elastic tunes of female vocals act on the edge of some slope, brow, rocky cliff – abyss spreads further, nirvana or eternal life. Those, who had crossed that line, turned into cranes or in some spirit melodies like these ones, for example. Deep and deep in silver light, disappearing in the flight... It's the dance on the strings of koto, which can talk with space and ground.
Japanese always say, that true art doesn't have any heavy point or sense, it should be clean and simple like one word on mighty stone, just like one inky hieroglyph on rice-paper. There is the same in this music – it's delicate and nice, it's minimal and it was born by serenity – music is also melting in quiet, in peace of mountain's moans, in whiteness of mute lakes.
