Byron Metcalf & Rob Thomas ‎– Medicine Work

Byron Metcalf & Rob Thomas ‎– Medicine Work
Dr. BAM's Music, 2013

Unearthly forces of gravity rule the whole planet. Humans wander in their thoughts through a lot of far away and unfamiliar coasts, but their eyes send to celestial blue arches. A reason to stay on the ground is to fly by wind. Searches of permanent foothold turn into perpetual motion. Perpetuum mobile. Annular, circular rotation around its own axis. Descendants of human race, who are similar to planets, who are similar to the Earth, whirl in universal dance, which is continued by millenniums and which can't be ever stopped.

A rich stream of sound elixir flows from the dark placement, that is more close to some cave. Uncertain image is twinkling there, such an archaic being – may be it's a primitive, may be it's an anxious spirit. Probably, all of these visions-projections change each other, and, little by little gazing into inky gloom, we can locate a figure of undersized and scrubby shaman, who looks like disheveled raven. He composes a rite of banishment of evil forces, dancing mystic circles and making fiery whirligigs. He is inside immaterial world of  soul now. This world is balanced by fusion of cosmic ethers. The magician is watching a birth of stars and flights of asteroids, he attends to all of the planet's parades. In his power is to change the past and the future, because life of all galaxy is just a light, is just a glow, that had stayed after its death. The medium, that performs a dance of eternity's breathe, is coming back to the dale of living, but he is already died in his otherworldly entity.

This represented work of enough-known percussion player Byron Metcalf and musician Rob Thomas, that plays didgeridoo so arcane, is impregnated by the genuine spirit of shamanism. Medicine Work is a deep immersion to the magic and spiritualistic sphere of sound. Music, that has divine sense, can treat injuries, can restore sight for blind people, can cure insane. Both the name of album and diversity of soundscape refer to one of the oldest meanings and destinations of playing in such sacral and ancient instruments like didgeridoo, frame and ceremonial drums ‎– it's a point of healing by the agency of sound. And it can say us about direct connection of material world with inner foundation.

Ritual atmosphere is achieved trough palpitating drums and trough saturated streams of all-pervading, intergalactic sounding of didgy, that creates such vibrations, which dissolve being totally. There's nothing but free space. An ethereal eye is drifting between hundreds of Earth civilizations and those ones, which are over it. It contains mysteries of Creation and enigma of Absolute. It seems, that spellbinding sound breaks the expanse through, making black holes and enchanting portals, that are full of ever-changing shapes and colors.

This album is a really starry-eyed. It has no naive new-age stuff. Medicine Work is a new actual composition, which can be great for those listeners, who prefer picturesque, ritual and shamanic music.
